Typesetting review: Kuromajo-san ga Tooru (updated)

Kuromajo-san ga Tooru typesetting review

Groups: Asumiss, Choco, Anxious-He

Asumiss

Well, at least the font choice is decent.

Choco

They couldn’t even manage to translate the episode title. Instead, I will amuse you will their choice in font for the “chants.”

The line is “Ruki-Uge Ruki-Uge Biberare! Ruki-Uge Ruki-Uge Biberare!” (at least according to them) but with the font they used it looks like that. Awesome.

Anxious-He

I guess it’s nice that they translated this but it looks pretty shitty.

Bad font choice, wrong border color.

This isn’t bad. It’d look better with a smaller border and/or a bigger font size. Also, it should be to the left a bit.

No fade, still looks as bad as the first time.

Grades

Asumiss: C-. Episode title is translated at least.

Choco: D-. This show has one sign so I can’t really give them an F.

Anxious-He: C+. They actually did a bunch of signs. Not sorted by time.

  1. What the Satan’s fiery dick, why the fuck my fades ain’t there? I sure as fuck did add fade. If this is some sorta VSFilter problem, fuck that shit.
And I think my title font looks pretty neat, but >opinions.
Oh, and http://i.imgur.com/9gjVm.jpg , so there’s a color conversion problem. There’s no chance I’d make a beginner mistake like that, lol.

  2. >fades

http://privatepaste.com/c9dc8cbd3b As you can see, none of these lines have correct fades. They should all be fad(459,0).

    >title

The font is fine, the problem is the colors are wrong and the font has no blur.

    >colors

Well, it’s not so much that you have a color conversion problem, it’s more to do with VSFilter. VSFilter always plays back in BT.601 (which looks like my screenshots) even though anime is created in BT.709 so if you don’t have avisynth load the video in Aegisub 2.1.9 the colors will be wrong. Even if you do that there are a lot of other issues. You should really be using 3.0 and checking “Force BT.601” in the video options. tl;dr read this http://privatepaste.com/a6157ef501 (plork is one of the main aegisub devs).

    • Meh, libass renders them just fine and if it render them fine, I’m, like, A-OK wiv it.

      >colors
I’m too lazy to make a good-looking gradient. Erryting looks fine enuff to me.
As for the blur, lol w/e. I don’t really give a fuck. It’s mostly your personal preference, that is, whether to add blur or not.

      >aegisub3.0
I’d sure as hell use it but it’s unstable as hell on Linux.

But yeah, opinions are opinions, so it’s stupid to start argue about ’em. I really do appreciate that you review typesetting and whatnot (though I really have low standards toward typesetting and an8’d TS is fine enuff to me, lol.)

      • It might render correctly on libass but most people use vsfilter so that’s what I’m going to review typesetting against.

Also blur makes signs look better 99.9% of the time. Almost no signs look better with no blur compared to some. It’s not really my personal preference and I’ve never seen any good typesetter disagree.

        >3.0
As far as I know it’s pretty stable now. Even if it’s not, it makes typesetting much easier and faster.

  3. I know that but I’m a libass fanboy and am all for people switching over to libass. So, yeah.

Yeah, that’s true that blur makes stuff look better 99.9% of the time. Yes, I do add blur to everything expect show titles/episode titles. I dunno why; it’s just my personal preference. I think I should’ve clarified myself more, lol.

OK, good to know. I shall do “svn up” and recompile it. Yeah, it really does make shit faster. I love that it updates realtime what you do. Shit’s glorious.

    • OK, I think I should clarify myself even more. Whether I add blur or not depends on the style of the title. Damn, it’s hard to explain. Well, whatever. It’s not like it has any sexual meaning. After all, we all are gay.

    • i wish libass was the reference renderer too but it still has a lot of bugs. so does xyvsfilter. shit sucks.
