A Case Study in Comedy Anime: “Teekyu”

The funniest show ever!

Better than Soft Tennis!

Not.

The title was originally “A Case Study in Unfunny Anime” because anime is rarely funny. Teekyu just happens to be a recent example I watched ten minutes ago. Too often do anime writers depend on puns, quite possibly the lowest form of comedy. It’s great if you want to rack up karma on reddit, but it’s not so great if you want to be legitimately funny. Teekyu is all about puns and fast delivery—none of which are funny. At all. About the only part I actually chuckled was when pink-haired girl started sinking into the court. It’s sad when the funniest part of the three episodes I watched was a visual gag in which the dialogue contributed nothing.

I’m not sure if everyone was being sarcastic in the comments section of my other blog post because Teekyu is terrible, like all of Fall 2012 anime, save for maybe two. I’ll just leave some screenshots of a few unfunny moments. If I had to capture every unfunny moment, I’d just put up the entire episodes.

I don’t even.

Try being funny.

So funny.

Don’t be funny. Oh, wait. You’re already doing that.

Still not being funny either.

lel xD&D

J/8 on the funny scale.

Kinda funny, in a lolrandumbXD kind of way.

I hope you can tell how much I hate this show as well as the majority of shows marketed as pure comedy shows. Incompetent writers will never (okay, rarely) be funny.

Anyway, now that I’m back from hibernation, next on my list is an in-depth analysis of why My Little Monster (Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun) is the definitive show of the season bar none. If you disagree, you’re a faggot, and I hate you. After that, I’ll probably watch Even Faggots Want to be Loved! (Chuunibyou Demo Koi ga Shitau!) over Thanksgiving break and write some in-depth analysis on that as well: Is KyoAni saving anime, or are they wasting my goddamn time instead of animating Haruhi? I’ll also see if I can’t think of anything special about My Little Monster or Faggots: the Anime to write something similar to my Ichika blog. Until next time.

P.S. Where’s vale?

  1. “Is KyoAni saving anime, or are they wasting my goddamn time instead of animating Full Metal Panic?”
    Fixed that for you.

  2. Yukiatsuruko, how about Tonari’s women/woman vs Sukitte’s? A comparison, not a death match btw.

        • I actually liked the first ep of Sukitte. At the very least, it was well-executed, unlike most episode 1’s, but the ‘super-serious’ thing got suffocating pretty fast.

BTW, I don’t know about anyone else, but I vote death match. Not enough death matches in shoujo, IMHO.

  3. The humor comes from exactly how shitty is the show, how bad are the puns, and how impossibly fast is everything delivered.

In short, it’s so bad that it’s good.

For the record, Akikan is the record holder in this aspect.

  4. From this I can gather you have no taste for comedy.

What is comedy done right in your opinion?

    • I dunno about brainchild, but I don’t really appreciate Teekyuu for the comedy. More like how amusing an insanely fast-paced two minute show manages to be. (The nice animation helps too.)
