Translation Review: [gg]_Shingeki_no_Kyojin_-_04

[gg]_Shingeki_no_Kyojin_-_04_[36EF8BD0].mkv_snapshot_01.23_[2013.04.30_17.26.20]

This song is kinda hard to translate (and also very, very good), but gg did a nice job with it. They didn’t sub the German lines, but that’s hardly a deal-breaker.

[gg]_Shingeki_no_Kyojin_-_04_[36EF8BD0].mkv_snapshot_00.18_[2013.04.30_17.21.16]

The word used here means “trampled/infringed/violated”. While this line isn’t technically wrong per se and doesn’t really change much for the viewer, it just leaves me wondering if they mixed up juurin (蹂躙, trampled) and kourin (降臨, descent). Just thinking aloud, though.

Twins?

[gg]_Shingeki_no_Kyojin_-_04_[36EF8BD0].mkv_snapshot_06.55_[2013.04.30_21.20.14]

“You don’t have to say it like that.”

[gg]_Shingeki_no_Kyojin_-_04_[36EF8BD0].mkv_snapshot_08.47_[2013.04.30_21.22.24] [gg]_Shingeki_no_Kyojin_-_04_[36EF8BD0].mkv_snapshot_08.48_[2013.04.30_21.22.27]

Brilliantly done.

[gg]_Shingeki_no_Kyojin_-_04_[36EF8BD0].mkv_snapshot_14.48_[2013.04.30_21.30.33]

“We got our answer once we lost more than twenty percent of our entire population.”

Basically, he’s saying the writing was on the wall/they got the message loud and clear when they lost that many people that mankind stood no chance against the titans.

[gg]_Shingeki_no_Kyojin_-_04_[36EF8BD0].mkv_snapshot_15.26_[2013.04.30_21.31.20] [gg]_Shingeki_no_Kyojin_-_04_[36EF8BD0].mkv_snapshot_15.30_[2013.04.30_21.31.24]

Very good.

[gg]_Shingeki_no_Kyojin_-_04_[36EF8BD0].mkv_snapshot_17.28_[2013.04.30_21.34.24] [gg]_Shingeki_no_Kyojin_-_04_[36EF8BD0].mkv_snapshot_17.34_[2013.04.30_21.34.31]

Commander for both?

[gg]_Shingeki_no_Kyojin_-_04_[36EF8BD0].mkv_snapshot_17.43_[2013.04.30_21.34.42] [gg]_Shingeki_no_Kyojin_-_04_[36EF8BD0].mkv_snapshot_17.45_[2013.04.30_21.34.51] [gg]_Shingeki_no_Kyojin_-_04_[36EF8BD0].mkv_snapshot_17.48_[2013.04.30_21.35.17] [gg]_Shingeki_no_Kyojin_-_04_[36EF8BD0].mkv_snapshot_17.51_[2013.04.30_21.35.21]

This exchange is kind of a mess. Nearly there, but not quite.

“Things look completely different from five years ago.”

“People really count on the Recon Corps a lot now.”

“Everyone’s been cheering up lately.”

“Nothing’s happened these past five years, after all.”

[gg]_Shingeki_no_Kyojin_-_04_[36EF8BD0].mkv_snapshot_18.36_[2013.04.30_21.36.13] [gg]_Shingeki_no_Kyojin_-_04_[36EF8BD0].mkv_snapshot_18.39_[2013.04.30_21.36.18] [gg]_Shingeki_no_Kyojin_-_04_[36EF8BD0].mkv_snapshot_18.42_[2013.04.30_21.36.22]

“We’re no longer ignorant.”

“We won’t let that sort of tragedy happen again.”

“We will defeat the Titans.”

[gg]_Shingeki_no_Kyojin_-_04_[36EF8BD0].mkv_snapshot_19.06_[2013.04.30_21.36.58]

効いた, not 聞いた.

“Looks like your speech yesterday worked on him.”

[gg]_Shingeki_no_Kyojin_-_04_[36EF8BD0].mkv_snapshot_19.42_[2013.04.30_21.37.46]

Random screenshot because I just want to mention how great Sasha is, and how perfect a casting choice Kobayuu was for this role.

[gg]_Shingeki_no_Kyojin_-_04_[36EF8BD0].mkv_snapshot_19.56_[2013.04.30_21.38.16]

She actually says cows and sheep, but this works a lot better. The little things matter.

[gg]_Shingeki_no_Kyojin_-_04_[36EF8BD0].mkv_snapshot_20.11_[2013.04.30_21.38.38]

“Don’t just stand there, Eren.”

[gg]_Shingeki_no_Kyojin_-_04_[36EF8BD0].mkv_snapshot_21.03_[2013.04.30_21.39.44]

Very hard to hear, but he says “Hot!” here.

[gg]_Shingeki_no_Kyojin_-_04_[36EF8BD0].mkv_snapshot_21.56_[2013.04.30_21.40.40]

“Artillery Maintenance Squad 4!”

[gg]_Shingeki_no_Kyojin_-_04_[36EF8BD0].mkv_snapshot_23.56_[2013.04.30_21.41.15]

Fantastic line made even better when you take the visual into account.

[gg]_Shingeki_no_Kyojin_-_04_[36EF8BD0].mkv_snapshot_24.06_[2013.04.30_21.41.34]

I’m not sure if this was deliberate, but they did a nice job in avoiding a minor spoiler in the preview.

What the line actually says: “Eren saves him, but…”

Conclusion: Good

Accuracy: 8/10; Flow: 8/10; Atmosphere: 9/10

A very good release that has some fantastic lines and does the little things right. While there are some issues here and there, most of them are minor enough to make this a safe bet for the majority of you out there – especially considering the speed at which it comes out.

  1. Thanks, Futsuu! I had fun with some of those lines, and vale’s TL makes it a pleasure to edit this show (also, thanks to fnord). It’s always nice to get constructive feedback. Oh, and I fixed that fucking “Bernard” in the eyecatch; it just didn’t save in the pad.

  2. Just a note– the cows and sheep line probably should have kept to the original. The point is the need for land– cows and sheep are both grazing animals, and you need a lot of space to keep them. Pigs are not, and don’t, and wouldn’t be included in a discussion about needing large amounts of land to keep animals. Most of the meat they do get in this society is probably chickens and pigs, although there’d still be a problem of what to feed them if you don’t have large areas to grow grain.

    • I inferred she was talking about having them as food. Cause y’know… they’re talking about how meat is rare and rationed.

  3. Hi there,

Is it possible to review Hatsuyuki’s version of Attack on Titan?
I just read your review about their version of Railgun 2 and wondered if Attack on Titan is just as much of a mess.
I didn’t experience it as such, but my Japanese skill is about 0.1% so hardly a good judge of quality. The sentences did seem to flow properly and match your corrections on GG’s version.
So if you could that would be great.

    Greets
