Black ★ Rock Shooter 05 – notes and the like This entry was posted by Vale.
Black Rock Shooter’s script is insanely simple, so I probably won’t be writing about it every single episode, unless something worthy of mention comes up. There is something this week.
The fight scenes are awesome as usual. When in the first minutes it just kept going on and on, I hoped it would keep going all episode… Honestly, I could live without middle school girls’ whining.
But the fights have no dialog, so nothing for me to write about. The real world girls, however…
Can you spot the mistake on the picture? Anyway, that’s not the point for now. I wanted to write about Yuu’s nickname in the basketball team – at least for the time she spent there. During the trip in episode 3, when the team captain can’t remember her name, she refers to herself with a nickname that I translated as Yuu Underfoot. The original is jaamane (ジャーマネ), but at the time I didn’t even realize what was the pun about it. I just heard the jama (邪魔, meaning obstacle, hindrance) in it, and decided to go with the first such nickname that came to my mind: Underfoot. Those of you who read GRR Martin’s Song of Ice and Fire series will be familiar with the nickname. It was what the people of Winterfell called Arya (who was always in the way). But Mato has a flashback of that scene in episode 5, and this time I realized what the pun was. Yuu was a manager of the basketball team, and in Japanese that sounds like maneejaa (マネージャー). They just put the ja in the beginning of the word, resulting in the ultimate nickname for a manager girl who’s more of a hindrance than help.
First 7 minutes had approx 50 lines of dialogue and they started jamming in all the dialogue towards the end. It was the only episode of BRS I’ve seen and I think it has a potential to be a good show if it carries on the mood from the last few mins of this ep.
