Now I regret that I hadn’t read all the novels before starting the series. To be honest it turned into something very different from what I expected, and I never thought it could be actually important to check where the story’s going beforehand. I regret that dearly.
The whole story of this Juumonji incident is a ripoff of the Agatha Christie story titled the ABC Murders. As the title suggests, people get killed in ABC order, in places to match their names.
In Hyouka, this turns into clubs getting robbed of minor items in “alphabetic” order – of course not the Latin alphabet, but the Japanese one, where the kana (syllables) are ordered into a 5×10 table. Read up. Had I read the novels beforehand, I’d have given them all nicknames to fit the alphabetic order – though even then, the names of the items stolen would have given me trouble. The list…

- 壁新聞部 (kabeshinbun-bu) – カッター (kattaa) (News Poster Club – cutter knife)
- 奇術部 (kijutsu-bu) – キャンドル (k(i)yandoru) (Magic Club – candle)
- 軽音部 (keion-bu) – 弦 (gen) (Music Club – string)
Satoshi was waiting at the quizzies because that club was supposed to come (quiz (クイズ) starts with a “ku”).
In Japanese it’s called “Straw Millionaire”. You might’ve heard about this idea in relation to the red paperclip adventure. It’s basically the same thing.
Side note: I really dislike this story arc. I don’t mind if there are a few weird coincidences in a story, but if a story only consists of weird coincidences, especially if it’s supposed to be a (detective) mystery, then there are problems.
The most popular example of 陸山 is read as Rikuzan – it’s a political scandal. What Oreki says, the Rikuyama is a reasonable reading as well, but in this case it’s Kugayama.
安心院, read as Ajimu here and as a place in Kyuushuu, would be read as Anshin’in if you didn’t know it was a reading exception and tried reading by each kanji’s on-reading.
Wow I was really looking forward to the notes of these episodes, I thought there would be more things to remark…
I thought the rest of the episodes were pretty self-explanatory. If there was anything you didn’t get, feel free to point them out.
Oreki messed up a couple kanji readings in the latest episode. Would you mind elaborating on those a bit?

Coincidences? I suppose you consider a coincidence that Oreki get the manga with the hints but … I don’t think it is.
Just look what his sister is looking at beginning of Ep. 16 (there are two posters…) and what she says.
