Timing review: [Whine-Subs] La storia della Arcana Famiglia

The moment you’ve all been waiting for.

Although I don’t plan on doing more timing reviews (because I have to actually watch the episode), I heard the timing for this release was done by our Lord and Savior Dark_Sage himself. I also heard it was really bad so I wanted to see just how bad. I figured sharing how bad it was with the rest of you guys would also be very amusing, so here we go.

Also I guess I should write a few things about how I’m reviewing this. What I’m doing is watching the episode normally in MPC and if a line catches my eye I check in Aegisub and see if it’s mistimed (then copy it to the blog post). About 90% of the ones I notice are actual errors so it’s not like I’m being unreasonable and going through Aegisub line by line (though that would make a lot of these errors really obvious). Also obviously most people won’t notice these things but what would be the point in a review if the person doing the review knew nothing of the subject.

Oh also my impromptu rating scale.

[23:00:38] <herkz> on my made up fansubbing scale
[23:00:40] <herkz> CR is 1/5
[23:00:48] <herkz> 2/5 is "improved CR but still bad"
[23:01:04] <herkz> 3/5 is like there's not that many errors and it's watchable
[23:01:19] <herkz> 4/5 is like no bleeds but maybe some other issues or bad linking or stuff like that
[23:01:22] <herkz> and 5/5 is obv perfect
[23:02:14] <herkz> if i wanted to include really bad like funi-tier timing or something
[23:02:19] <herkz> CR would be a 3/5 most of the time, lol

Dialogue: 0,0:00:08.21,0:00:09.94,Default,,0,0,0,,and you will be taken into custody.

A huge bleed on the third line. I am disappoint. Especially since the keyframe shows up in Aegisub from the keyframes in the video. Stuff like this should be impossible to miss.

Dialogue: 0,0:00:50.09,0:00:51.98,Default,,0,0,0,,What you're offering is called

Way too much lead-in.

Dialogue: 0,0:00:51.98,0:00:54.11,Default,,0,0,0,,an unwelcome favor.

Ends one line before a keyframe.

Dialogue: 0,0:01:12.87,0:01:14.01,Default,,0,0,0,,Like I'd let you—

Bleeds way past a keyframe. Also, this line is far too long for how much time it should have.

Dialogue: 0,0:01:18.62,0:01:20.57,Default,,0,0,0,,We can catch up by using the back roads!

Bleed.

Dialogue: 0,0:02:04.74,0:02:08.06,Default,,0,0,0,,There'll be plenty of time for that after we finish our patrol.

Too much lead-out.

Dialogue: 0,0:02:10.56,0:02:12.98,Default,,0,0,0,,you'll also need time to change.

No lead-in and bleeds.

Dialogue: 0,0:02:51.10,0:02:52.14,Default,,0,0,0,,You kidding me?!

Should end at the actual keyframe a few frames later.

Dialogue: 0,0:02:57.54,0:02:59.07,Default,,0,0,0,,No need to worry.

Bleed.

Dialogue: 0,0:03:03.38,0:03:04.65,Default,,0,0,0,,Pace.

Too much lead-in.

Dialogue: 0,0:03:06.12,0:03:07.25,Default,,0,0,0,,Move!

No lead-in.

Dialogue: 0,0:03:25.40,0:03:28.64,Default,,0,0,0,,I-I give up.

I’m not sure you can turn this into a stutter when there is a one second gap and a keyframe in between.

Dialogue: 0,0:03:35.45,0:03:38.32,Default,,0,0,0,,what are we going to do about the car?

This has negative lead-in. Impressive.

Dialogue: 0,0:03:42.99,0:03:44.74,Default,,0,0,0,,You act way too boldly!

Bleeds one frame past a keyframe.

Dialogue: 0,0:03:47.72,0:03:49.43,Default,,0,0,0,,Just kidding!

Should end at the keyframe.

Dialogue: 0,0:04:10.91,0:04:12.64,Default,,0,0,0,,Then let me tell you.

Ends one frame before a keyframe.

Dialogue: 0,0:04:16.05,0:04:20.16,Default,,0,0,0,,That was the vigilante organization that protects Regalo Island,

Bleeds by four frames. ;_;

Dialogue: 0,0:04:21.10,0:04:22.99,Default,,0,0,0,,the Arcana Famiglia. {TL Note: Modern Italian would phrase this "Famiglia Arcana". "Arcana Famiglia" would have been used 300 years ago.}

Ends one line before a keyframe.

OP Karaoke

I dunno why each line fades in for one frame before looking how it does the rest of the time but it’s incredibly annoying.

The “nanika ga mezameru no” line bleeds a few frames.

Episode

Dialogue: 0,0:05:59.27,0:06:00.94,Default,,0,0,0,,Milady.{Oujo-sama.}

Ends one frame before a keyframe.

Dialogue: 0,0:06:28.24,0:06:28.65,Default,,0,0,0,,Yeah.

This line has almost no lead-out and is thus .41 seconds long. Impressive.

Dialogue: 0,0:06:32.65,0:06:33.32,Default,,0,0,0,,Today is—

Bleeds.

Dialogue: 0,0:06:39.98,0:06:42.96,Default,,0,0,0,,She used to be much more obedient.

Ends one frame before a keyframe.

Dialogue: 0,0:07:16.62,0:07:20.82,Default,,0,0,0,,We were all looking forward to seeing you in a dress.

Needs lead-in and should be snapped to the keyframe.

Dialogue: 0,0:07:33.94,0:07:35.16,Default,,0,0,0,,However,

Has too much lead-out and it’s not even snapped to the keyframe.

Dialogue: 0,0:07:37.15,0:07:40.38,Default,,0,0,0,, a dress wouldn't be suitable enough to allow for flexibility.

Too much lead-in.

Dialogue: 0,0:07:41.08,0:07:43.20,Default,,0,0,0,,Ah, I see what you're saying.

Ends one frame before a keyframe.

Dialogue: 0,0:08:09.94,0:08:10.42,Default,,0,0,0,,Huh?

This line manages to have neither lead-in nor lead-out and because of that it’s so short you can barely read it.

Dialogue: 0,0:08:22.06,0:08:23.63,Default,,0,0,0,,What's wrong?

Too much lead-in.

Dialogue: 0,0:08:49.00,0:08:51.40,Default,,0,0,0,,What the hell are you talking about?

Dialogue: 0,0:09:03.26,0:09:08.90,Default,,0,0,0,,have the first card, Il Matto: the Fool.

This part is timed incorrectly. The first line should end with the “omae wa” part. The second line also should have more lead-out and be linked to the following line.

Dialogue: 0,0:09:11.31,0:09:13.66,Default,,0,0,0,,And Nova, you too.

Ends a frame before a keyframe.

Too much lead-in.

Dialogue: 0,0:10:55.19,0:10:57.86,Default,,0,0,0,,We would like to start with a word from Papà.

Ends one line before a keyframe.

Dialogue: 0,0:11:16.62,0:11:18.48,Default,,0,0,0,,Our Regalo Island

Bleeds, mostly because something this short does not need split.

Dialogue: 0,0:11:18.48,0:11:20.62,Default,,0,0,0,,has overcome many hardships.

Comments: Holy shit this is worse than CR. I’m fairly sure they don’t just have a bunch of lines that are not snapped to keyframes for no reason whatsoever. Not to mention I’m also quite sure that some of the lines with little or no lead-in and lead-out are not things CR would do and a conscious decision by the timer of this release. This shit is fucking unwatchable and if you know anything about timing I suggest steering clear of this release.

  1. This leecher finds timing at least somewhat important. Bad timing is annoying at best and confusing at worst. I couldn’t give two shits about half the stuff Dark_Sage reviews (anything involving the opening or ending), and I usually find his typesetting reviews irrelevant. That said, I’d never go troll him for the inanity of those portions.

    tl;dr keep on keepin on

  2. This was interesting to say the least. Not very appealing nor necessary in my eyes. Though, I’m not a timer so it doesn’t really bother me. I guess these are things where certain type of people gather and circle jerk around a topic. Like obsessive mathematicians. “Did you see how he solved that derivative? He completely forget to use the power rule. What an imbecile.” Similar to that. No one really cares, and it’s just uninteresting. However, it doesn’t mean it’s useless, because those types of people are responsible for all the technology we have today. Not sure how this links to timing reviews, but there’s a bridge between the two somewhere.
