Translation review: [Mazui] Boku wa tomodachi ga sukunai NEXT 01

Title

That’s a quite famous rakugo story, by the way.

Opening

This song is so bad I can’t even focus on the translation properly.

Accessory

No, they put accessories in their hair the shape of 愛 (ai, love).

What

If “it” refers to the helmet, this line is wrong (she’s talking about the head getting respectful treatment). If “it” refers to the head, the phrasing is really bad. Either way, the phrasing is bad.

Tone

Such expression of tone is something you don’t usually see in a Mazui release. I’m impressed.

Castle

She’s talking about sand castles, not dunes.

Feast

I’ll just call this line very liberal… She says “This head would be a pleasure to take.” (御首級)

Words

“Unfortunate” isn’t really the right word. Rather “pitiful”.

That

Thoughts aren’t italicized.

Lives

It’s “Nine Lives Breaker”…

Maths

Cool typesetting. (Also: “I ended up not studying at all…”)

Stray

“Stray clouds”, not the singer getting lost. Funny that it’s the second line in the song… I’m even more reluctant to listen to all of it now.

Conclusion: Great

Accuracy: 8/10; Flow: 7/10; Atmosphere: 7/10

There are some really funny mistakes that really shouldn’t be there when the show has closed captions, though it’s nothing of much importance (as if there was any dialog in this show of any importance). The English reads like it was never edited and inner monologues are not italicized. Mazui’s release is just as accurate as Commie’s, but it loses in other fields, such as editing (flow) or typesetting.

  1. >The English reads like it was never edited
I always tell to avoid Mazui because they don’t have an editor but is this actually true?
